Digipak Changes After Feedback
Below I have slightly altered the digipak panels and the poster after receiving feedback from my previous layout.
I have decided on my final poster after having two possible layouts that I may use. I chose this layout because I thought that the information was best suited near the bottom and the title and artist name would be needed somewhere near the top. To this design, I have also added a white background behind the Spotify and Itunes information so that they stand out more. Below is the technique I used to make Ryans jacket in colour and the rest of the image in black and white...
Poster
I selected the polygonal lasso tool which allows you to specifically select a certain area of an image like below.
This is Ryans jacket which was cut out using the tool. This was then copied and pasted so that I could put the background image in black and white.
This is the final product
Digipak
Front Panel:
For this panel, I have simply increased the size of both sets of texts which I believe was needed because these two pieces of information are crucial on the front page.
CD Panel:
I was told that I needed to introduce a smaller circle in the middle of the CD disc to make it look more realistic. Someone in my class scanned a cd so I asked them if they could send me the image so that the dimension would be right and I believe that the disc looks much better.
Back Panel:
I was originally happy with the layout of the back panel but I have altered the image a bit more by keeping the colour in all of his jacket rather than just the blue. This has been done due to the feature of red in the background and this suits the panel much more because there is a lot of red in the background.
Side Panel:
For this panel, I have added all of the colour of Ryans jacket which I think is a good change because it fits nicely with the background.

Digipak collar
I am happy with how this looks because all of the information needed features on the collar and it links nicely with the other panels which is a crucial element. This may need to be slightly thinner but this can easily be done.
CD panel
I like the image that features on the CD because it fits well and is also quite an interesting image. This panel could be improved by changing the inner cirlce of the CD and making it more realistic. Also, I could just have a white border around the disc rather than the white and black outer rings. These, however, are only minor changes and I am fairly happy with the overall product.
Front Cover
These are two possible front panels for my digipak although I think the one at the bottom is better as the image looks better. I am haooy with the layout and the clipping mask with the image inside my logo as this helps the audience recognise the artist and also shows branding development. I also like the postioning of the texts, the font and the scale.
Back panel development
Here is my first attempt at the back panel of the digipak and I think that the layout works quite well. First, the image suits the layout and the panel because it fits nicely in the frame, which is the one I used for the other panel stretched out, and it is the actors back which is stereotypical of a back cover. I also like how a lot of the paint spill can be seen and how it fits behind the text. Finally, the barcode and other institutional information fit nicely at the bottom of the panel and all that is necessary features on the page. An area of improvement for this panel is the text because the font can be improved, emboldened and in capitals and the background could look better just as white with no texture and this is something I will look at in the near future. Overall, I happy with the start I have made on this panel, keeping to the checklist of back cover conventions below.
- Barcode
- Song Titles
- Copyright information
- Studio logo
- Production logo
- Small image
- Theme continued
Possible inside panel
This panel is likely to appear on the inside of the digipak and this includes the new effect and also leaving Ryans jacket blue and putting the rest of the image in black and white. I am happy with how this panel looks and this is likely to be used in the final digipak. One area of improvement for the panel is that there could be more manipulation in the image itself although too much manipulation could completely ruin the panel. One effect that I am keen to trail is the glitch effect which could work well with the theme.
New Clipping Mask
I wanted to see if I could improve the shape to position the image in and I ended up finding the one below. This shape was much more interesting than the previous one because it suits the genre well and is also a perfect square meaning it fits well on the digipak dimensions.
This an example of a possible panel on my digipak and I think this is a good theme that is very professional looking. The clipping mask works very well with the paint splats and textured background and I have now started to think about possible image manipulations. In this example, I have kept the colour in the eye but made the rest of the image black and white which works well due to the colour of the textured background. This effect will feature on my final product because this will also work well with the colours of my actor's clothing as he is wearing a red and blue Adidas jacket. The effect is also easy to replicate and is one that will enhance the value of the digipak.
Digipak Development
After getting feedback that my last two ideas were not that good and that I could do something better, I have now developed a new theme that I believe is by far the best out of my three ideas. Due to Britpop being a key part of my artist, I thought that it was important to refer to this in my digipak. Consequently, I have introduced red splatters and a textured blue background as these two colours are key features of the genre, hence allowing the audience to understand the genre of the music. Below are two initial ideas that clearly demonstrate the effect I am trying to create.
The two images above were fairly simple to create. To do this I firstly looked for a textured background and altered to the colour of it to cyan blue in photoshop using the selective colour tool. Next, I looked for a png file of a paint splatter, which there was many to choose from. Once inserted and positioned, I duplicated the layer and moved it to another angle which created a more obvious effect that surrounded the whole image. Finally, I used the clipping mask tool to position the image in the shape that I created using an edgy brush tool which ended up creating quite a nice effect. This was positioned over the red splatters to make it clearly stand out.
Editing Diary (Jan 11th)
In today's lesson, we came with areas to improve the video after watching it a few times before. This lesson was all about making these improvements and we found this to be very helpful because we believe that we now virtually finished. The areas that we picked up on were only minor because we edited the video meticulously and they were mainly lip syncing errors, which if are slightly off can look bad. Below is an image outlining the elements of the video that we improved...

New panels
These two panels will appear on the inside of my digipak and I think that they look good with the theme applied. I am unsure yet whether to dissolve the outside of the image as trialled above as I think the image behind will need to be a colour other than white to be effective. I am happy with the theme although I may need to alter it slightly yo suit the genre more which should be easy to do.
Possible effect for ending
Final Cut
- Good pace of editing
- Variety of shots (particularly the outdoor performance scenes)
- Camera Work was consistently good (no obvious blur or shakiness)
- Good Ending- tied the video up well and used the pace of the music to build up the climax

Editing (3rd)
In yesterdays lesson, we watched the whole video a few times to pick out clips that needed to be added or ones that needed to be altered. We found this to be very effective and is likely to be what we do for the next couple of lessons because we are now focusing on the finer details now that all of the footage has been introduced into the video. We also started to swap some earlier clips with the new footage of Ryan lip syncing in the street as this footage is some of our best. Because we filmed this halfway through editing, there is none of this footage in most of the video so we have now started to include it. As previously mentioned, we will now continue to improve the video looking at minor things that will improve the video and we also still need to complete the final section of the video where we need to build up the tension to the moment where the man swings the bottle which I think we have done quite well already. Below is the footage that we recently filmed of Ryan lip syncing in the streets...
Possible poster design
This is my first attempt at my digipak poster and I think the text and other information works well on the old image effect that I have started to introduce into my digipak. In this design, I experimented with the album title and made it similar to the artist's name which I think looks quite good. I have also added my logo, release date and places where the album can be found and these are all important things that need to feature on a poster. I believe that this design could be improved with two changes... First, I think the image I have used doesn't look right and I think this could be replaced with a mid shot of my actor with a plain white background behind him as this will mean that the old image effect will be enhanced and look even more professional. Also, I think I could alter the positioning of the text as it all looks quite muddled at the moment. A better image will help this as if his face is at the top of the poster, all the information can be in the bottom half and could look a bit more engaging. Overall, I am happy with the start I have made on the poster and am comfortable with my theme which I think suits the genre well.

Back panel images
These images are a selection of the best pictures that I took for the back panel of my digipak. I wanted to include smashed glass into the digipak to link with the song and I also thought that this would be quite unique. Of the images above, I prefer the bottom one as I think song titles and other information would be able to be positioned well around the image. The only images that I need to take now are of my actor against a plain background so I can put the off-white effect onto the images.
